Illinois Youth Soccer & the Illinois Women’s Soccer League (IWSL) are excited to announce a joint sponsorship of the newly formed Chicago Red Stars Reserves Team in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL).
The Red Stars Reserves Team will consist of many Illinois homegrown players on hiatus from college and designated players on the current NWSL roster. The new team will work as a feeder program for the National Women’s Soccer League franchise and allow additional opportunities for young women to continue to play the beautiful game.
“Since half of our members are girls,” said Illinois Youth Soccer president Gus Bender, “it is incumbent on us to support programs that provide opportunities for women in an organized and progressive environment.”
“We are excited to be a part of this opportunity to support and grow women's soccer,” Flo Dyson, IWSL President said. “The addition of the Chicago Red Stars Reserves will strengthen the cadre of accomplished athletes available to reach and compete at that higher level.”
The Chicago Red Stars players are some of the most accomplished athletes in their respective discipline in the country. The team is made up of Olympic medalists, World Cup champions, NCAA champions and All-Americans. The Red Stars 2014 NWSL roster currently boasts several players who competed in the IWSL and many who were part of the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program including Illinois ODP.
Illinois Youth Soccer Associate Director of Coaching, Jennifer Pfieffer will serve as an Assistant Coach for the team. Chris King is the team’s Head Coach.
“This was the perfect time for us to add a reserves team under our umbrella,” stated Red Stars General Manager Alyse LaHue. “The support of both IYSA and IWSL has been unwavering for the women’s game and we excited to take this step forward with them for women’s soccer in Illinois.”
The Red Star Reserves WPSL season kicks off May 31 at 4:30pm versus the Des Moines Menace in Iowa. The home opener will be at 1pm on June 1 at the Oak Brook Polo Fields against the Minnesota Twin Stars. Click here for a complete Red Stars Reserve schedule
